While I am delighted at the desire to protect Ostrander Point and Point Petre, I am amazed to see that the intended usage of the site includes bird watching, recreation and hunting, an oxymoron if there ever was one.
How do families visit the site for recreational purposes while hunters are lurking in the bushes? While guns are blasting away, there will be no birds about for bird watchers to enjoy. The birds will all be taking cover.
While hunters stride about in orange vests, bird watchers try to blend in with the trees. How many bird watchers will die after being mistaken for deer?
How pleasant will it be for families picnicking with their little ones to see a goose or duck shot out of the sky?
If we are truly trying to protect Ostrander Point and Point Petre, should that protection not also be extended to the wild things that make these beautiful pieces of land true sanctuaries where people and nature become deeply connected?
