We strongly support the establishment of the Prince Edward County South Shore Conservation Reserve. The creation of this reserve will provide greater protection the flora and fauna of the area. The South Shore is home to the threatened Blanding's Turtles, globally imperiled Alvar and dozens of species at risk. The biodiversity of the area needs to be maintained through ecologically sustainable practices that ensure the protection of the natural heritage of the area.
Protection is also necessary because these public lands, specifically Point Petre Wildlife Area and Ostrander Point Crown Land Block are part of the South Shore Important Bird and Biodiversity Area which is internationally recognized as a critical migratory pathway.
The South Shore is very important for the wetland and forest habitats which provide many environmental services to all life in the area.
We urge you to recognize the value of biodiversity and role of nature in sustaining all life and ask that you do your part by designating the South Shore of Prince Edward County as a Conservation Reserve.
