Alfred Bog should absolutely be conserved as a unique ecosystem and the largest peat bog remaining in southern Ontario. There are extremely rare species of plants and animals that are protected under provincial regulation within the ecosystem, it is a massive carbon store, and should absolutely be kept at its current extent. Measures to minimize any further disturbances (ATV, peat extraction), block existing drainage ditches (monitoring impacts on water levels), and fine any illegal peat mining at its edge. Further any industries that could have adverse affects on sensitive nutrient balance of the system should be banned, such as a proposed cement site, or studies undertaken to ensure there is a sufficient buffer area and no impact). As a unique ecosystem (only comparable to Mer Bleue, but has experienced much greater disturbances) that developed over 8,000 years old and with the deepest part of the southern dome remaining - all measures to preserve what remains and create a buffer around it to minimize further edge disturbances / impacts should be pursued. I greatly support the protection of this park through provincial parks and believe all measures to minimize further disturbances should be pursued - while maintaining existing board walk to allow access to this wonderfully unique ecosystems.
