I realize this was a political maneuver but in terms of sound and basic economic principles, cap and trade (which is not a tax as was continually promoted), is a beneficial tool and market for our economy, clearly from a carbon reduction standpoint to improve our population's health and risk to impacts from rising carbon into the atmosphere but also from an economic standpoint. It allowed middle to lower income individuals to do updates on their houses that they would have not have been able to afford, further reducing their utility expenses ongoing as well as funding for organizations to implement projects that save money - which were rigorously judged based on a strong business case criteria (low payback period). I've been impacted negatively both in my personal and professional position through this repeal, which also means I wasn't able to put money into the economy through projects I had imminently planned.
The incorrect information going on to the public in terms of the nature of this tool and its financial impact is worrying. The long term cost to Ontarians will be way higher. The impact of carbon in the atmosphere is pure science not politics and should be handled as such.
I strongly oppose the dismantling of Cap and Trade in Ontario from a health, social and economic perspective and truly hope the Government of Ontario will take this incredibly massive issue seriously, particularly considering the massive financial impact climate change is already burdening our province and country with.
