The greenbelt holds a great importance to the ecosystem of Ontario and preserving large areas of greenspace is important for both the human population of Ontario as well as the animals that live there. Building more subdivisions on the outskirts of the GTA won't solve the housing crisis and will only generate more traffic as most people commute into Toronto for work. The congestion on the 401 and Queensway have gotten significantly worse over the years, even leaving as early as 5am isn't a guarantee you have an easy drive.

Ontario should be investing in improving existing infrastructure in the GTA; investing more in public transit to reduce car traffic, building high density housing and ensuring that existing housing is seen as a human necessity before being treated as an investment. The GTA already has plenty of land to use without needing to expand into the greenbelt, cities worldwide have larger populations living comfortably on a land area smaller than ours (ex. London, England). A lot of the newer communities that have cropped up over the years in Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Pickering, Richmond Hill, etc. are low density developments that are heavily dependent on cars, don't add new jobs to the area and remove much needed greenspace from the area.

Before expanding into the greenbelt and possibly causing environmental problems for the population of Ontario in the future, we should make better use of the land we've already developed.
