Many of these proposed changes in Bill 23 will lead to an urban situation that is practically un-livable. What is the point in creating housing if that housing amounts to little more than tenements? Decreasing park space, which is already at a minimal level for bearable urban living, does little more than enrich developers. It certainly will not speed up housing development.
Further, reducing development fees and requirements unloads those costs directly onto already burdened tax payers without any benefit beyond increasing profits for developers.
Using dedicated, once protected green space for these developments is another foolish and dangerous aspect of this bill. It ignores the vital role that green spaces play in ameliorating climate change, in creating vital species diversity, and in fostering a sustainable, enjoyable living style for a large majority of people, not just the rich ones. The current provincial government of Ontario seems to view these vital green spaces as merely ‘wasted’ land, ripe to be exploited for profit. Open for Business’ but open to little else, and certainly not insightful solutions to making the lives of Ontarions better. It is typical of their short-sighted approach to the many complex problems involved in guiding Ontario into an increasingly precarious future.
