For a government that claims to be “for the people,” the decision to scrap a program that helped fund crucial public infrastructure is incomprehensible. Cap-and-trade money was funding energy-efficiency programs in schools, public housing, hospitals and transit systems, with proceeds for 2018-2019 estimated at $2 billion. So a new government that prides itself on being fiscally responsible is going to turn away $2 billion in revenue + pay out to cancel projects already underway, makes no economic sense, much less any environmental sense...
Tokyo, with metropolis of more than 13 million (on par with Ontario's population), launched its own cap & trade system aims to reduce emissions to 25 per cent below 2000 levels by 2020. If Tokyo, a city with a carbon footprint larger than many industrialized nations, is on board why not Ontario ?
After such a radical decision, there is no replacement program just promises of undetermined action to achieve undetermined and easily changed targets at some undetermined future time, with no criteria or consequences.
