Please include the term rock in the new "Hobby Mineral Collecting Guide". This is necessary as many hobby collectors do not specifically collect a mineral; they collect an aggregate of minerals, i.e. a rock. Some examples of this are children who pick up a pretty pebble or anyone who collects agate, iron formation, granite, conglomerate, etc. Any reasonable listing of collectible rocks in Ontario is incredibly large. The Mining Act and its associated regulations include the terms for mineral, mineral bearing substance and material, but they don't define 'rock' which has been an oversight as rock is used numerous times; it is used twice in the Act, twice in O. Reg. 308/12 and 53 times in O. Reg. 240/00. Most jurisdictions and experts specifically refer to this hobby as rock and mineral collecting; Ontario may want to consider changing the title of the new guide to be inclusive of all of the actual materials that have and will continue to be collected.
