I agree with the temporary suspension of the protection of Black Ash in Ontario. I did not feel that it should be listed as a protected species. My own observations have been that the White Ash and Green Ash tend to be the ones that I'm seeing impacted by the EAB. Read more

I live in Kincardine. Ash trees are (or were) a dominant tree species here in Bruce county. It is shocking to drive around the county and see entire forests of denuded tress during mid mid summer. The ash is clearly on the road to being completely wiped out. Read more

It seems reasonable to me that Black Ash be temporarily removed from the Endangered Species list for Ontario for a period of two years while the province develops a recovery plan strategy and policies for dealing with this species.

I urge the ministry to show leadership and responsibility and start protection of the Black Ash as soon as possible. We need all our trees to help retain and absorb carbon dioxide and help to mitigate climate change. It is irresponsible to delay protection. Read more

I strongly support the proposal to temporarily suspend the protection of Black Ash under the ESA for at least two years. Black Ash is currently prolific across the landscape. Time is needed to best decide how to protect this species appropriately. Read more

I disagree with the suspension. I am sure there are some temporary guidelines that can be put in place. e.g. Beech are protected, borrow some of the wording for that protection, or other tree protection wording to protect black ash. A suspension is just doing nothing to protect black ash.

"We are proposing a Minister’s regulation to temporarily pause the protections for Black Ash under the Endangered Species Act, for two years from the time it is added to the Species at Risk in Ontario List regulation. Read more

We understand the need to gather the evidence on socioeconomic implications of the proposed changes but are concerned that the Black Ash will continue to decline in number because of this postponement. Read more

This species can be added first while you work out a strategy. This is the process used under the Act for years and not following it is not acceptable. The rationale for delay is unfounded and risks loss of species and habitat. Also, there would be no guarantee the listing would happen. Read more

I support this proposal because it will give government and business more time to develop workable approachs to the protection and recovery of a relatively common species in Ontario.

This is not a good proposal. Black Ash should be designated for protection immediately without delay. Globally, Black Ash is critically endangered. There has already been a year’s delay in protecting the species. Read more

In 2019 the Government of Ontario should never have allowed changes to the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which are now decimating protections imperiled plants and animals. Please do not pause any of the protections for endangered black ash trees and their habitats. Read more

A 2 year delay in placing this tree species under protection is an unnecessary delay, given that the main threat is known already, and allows uncontrolled harvesting to continue while the species is under threat. Read more
