This proposal to increase conservation lands across the province is a step in the right direction. Existing protected areas are often disjunct, disconnected, and are not big enough to sustain wildlife and rare ecosystems in the face of increased development and climate change.
Creating corridors of protected conservation land is crucial to the survival of existing populations of species as well as those that will need to migrate north in the face of climate change. These connections will also help to maintain gene flow between populations that may otherwise become isolated and dwindle over time.
I am in favour of this proposal going ahead and I hope to see more land being considered for conservation in the near future. This is a good step in the right direction, but we will need far more than this to maintain a healthy environment for future generations of all species. Please consider increasing the conservation status of more unceded (crown) land through all possible means, along with purchasing (or helping conservation partners purchase) land around and between existing protected conservation areas.
