The proposal to opt out of the cap and trade program is infuriating, and makes clear that the current government does not care about the future of this province or its youth. Climate change is an urgent threat that requires a portfolio of responses in order to effectively mitigate its most catastrophic consequences, and pricing carbon pollution is an important part of that portfolio. Moreover, a revenue neutral carbon price is an excellent way to ensure that meaningful climate change action is taking place without harming the economy or the pocketbooks of the average Ontarian that Premier Ford claims to care so much about. Indeed, if the government goes through with this cancellation, history and the voters of Ontario will judge them harshly. Luckily the federal backstop will come into play - getting a cheque from the federal government celebrating the country’s climate action will prove to voters how wrong this move is should the government go through with it.
