The air pollution from Algoma Steel is alarming and dangerous. There are countless days when you can see dark soot fill the skyline and fall down on Sault Ste. Marie. You can smell and taste the particulates in the air and numerous residents have encountered graphite or steel fragments on their homes and vehicles. This is an environmental disaster and is causing elevated cancer rates in this region. Children go to school and grow up around this environmental disgrace. How contaminated is the soil and ground water? What dangerous toxic chemicals are falling on houses and being breathed in on the daily? We already know the pollution rates and emissions are far higher than other industries and the province has ignored residents' complaints and concerns about their health over corporate profit to allow Algoma Steel to operate like this. There are numerous coke spills and other chemical spills directly into the St. Mary's River. What more is needed to put an end to this toxic wasteland that is continuously contaminated a beautiful city and natural environment?
