The pollution from the Algoma Steel has been obvious my whole life. Growing up in the east end, we were continually wiping the black film off of our outdoor furniture. I was relieved, as an adult, to have settled and raised my children north of the city in greater Batchewana. I feel that we are the most possible out of the way of the steel plant pollution that we could be while still reaping the benefits of living close enough to the city. In recent years, with my children attending Korah high school, I’ve often noticed an awful acrid smelling odour that instantly gets in my throat very often as soon as I’m driving in the vicinity of the steel plant. I can feel it right away and I curse myself for not having turned off the climate control in my vehicle quickly enough or at least have turned it to recirculate. It shouldn’t be this bad. I question how anyone could live in the vicinity of the Algoma Steel let alone raise children there. I wouldn’t. I just wouldn’t ever. I don’t see how the Algoma Steel Corporation could, should or would be allowed any leeway whatsoever when it comes to emissions. They most certainly need to be going in the other direction making their emissions safer for everyone.
