I think that every opportunity to include and highlight indigenous communities in these areas both pre-colonization and at present should be taken. I fear that the perception of many Ontarians is that indigenous peoples do not exist in southern Ontario, but demonstrating a rich history of indigenous peoples in this area would challenge this belief. More focus should be on this aspect for education than should be on settler history, especially considering the proximity of Rouge Urban National Park which may already highlight settler history more so than indigenous history in this area.

I also think that it’s important to try and build relationships with nature outside of visitation and recreation. Having recreational experiences like hiking and biking are incredibly valuable, but I think a goal of Ontario parks should be to help visitors build a relationship to nature in urban areas. Spaces for cultural events for both indigenous peoples and settlers alike would help with this.

Finally, I would deeply take into consideration how invasive plants play into ecological integrity in this area, and if invasive plants are the direct cause of ecological damage, or merely present and filling a niche when no other plants are there. Is a goal of eradication particularly for plants listed in the proposal such as phragmites, garlic mustard, and buckthorn in this area realistic given the propagule pressure from other areas? Consider the actual risks posed to ecological integrity, biodiversity and the other ecosystem values you hold before using invasive species as a scapegoat for these damages. Is there an opportunity for invasive species to coexist with native species in this area? Do these species thrive under disturbance but reduce in dominance over time? Are they performing an ecosystem function not able to be filled by other species because of some disturbance? Consider how your perception and worldview surrounding invasive species impacts your management strategies.
