"Natural" gas should have no role in our future energy system and economy. It should be phased out, and quickly. The government should be supporting the rapid shift to solar, wind, and geothermal sources of electricity and strengthening interprovincial grid ties to take advantage of hydro power produced by our neighbours in Quebec and Manitoba. We should prohibit any new use of fossil gas for home and water heating, and provide grants and other incentives far beyond those recently announced for those homeowners and businesses already hooked up to gas.
Around the world, other nations are turning to renewable energy instead of the fossil gas which is wrecking our climate and endangering our homes, our towns, our agriculture and our natural environments. It is absolutely clear that renewables combined with energy storage systems can get us off this addiction, this bootlicking of corporations like Enbridge, that rely heavily on fracked gas imported from the U.S. (and threatened with a 25% tariff in the near future).
Not so long ago Ontario got off coal and was steadily reducing emissions in the power sector. The Province was supporting a shift to clean renewables ahead of many other jurisdictions. If this government hadn't reversed course in 2018 -- at a cost to the public purse of many millions of dollars -- we could be leading the way to a clean energy future. Instead, this government is increasing our greenhouse gas emissions and threatening the lives and well-being of ourselves, our children and grandchildren. Have you no shame?
