I am commenting on the proposed amendments to the rebuilding of Ontario Place Act, 2023.
Schedule 8 of the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025, seeks to exempt all projects tied to Ontario Place redevelopment and those related to its enterprise or activity from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993.
Part II specifically outlines that "minimum levels of public participation must be met before the Government of Ontario makes decisions on certain kinds of environmentally significant proposals for policies, Acts, regulations and instruments." Thus, Schedule 8 will eliminate public participation and the need to inform the public about environmentally significant activities within Ontario Place.
This proposed amendment does not benefit the public and instead provides profit to private sector members and initiatives. Giving Ontario Place redevelopment projects an exemption to such an important environmental precedent is not in the best interest of the public or the environment. I am calling on the Government of Ontario to remove Schedule 8 of the new Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025 as it undemocratic.
