I am commenting on the proposed amendments to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, 2023.
Firstly, I am vehemently opposed to the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025. This proposal looks like corporate interests and enterprises are going to be prioritized to the detriment of the environment in Ontario. Pushing for exemptions of the Endangered Species Act, 2008, bypassing Indigenous and public consultations, as well as professional environmental assessment is not going to "boost the economy"; it's selling out precious natural resources in Ontario to the highest bidder as quickly as possible and it is unacceptable.
I am also opposed to Schedule 8 which exempts every project tied to the Ontario Place redevelopment from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993, which specicfically calls for the, "... minimum levels of public participation that must be met before the Government of Ontario makes decisions on certain kinds of environmentally significant proposals for policies, Acts, regulations, and instruments". Schedule 8 will eliminate not only public participation, but transparency to the public overall about environmentally significant changes to Ontario Place.
This proposed amendment benefits only private sector interests and is to the detriment of oublic interest and environmental stewardship. The public and provincial government have a shared responsibility to care for the environment, which is why I am calling for the Government of Ontario to remove Schedule 8 of the new Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025.
