I have serious concerns about the implications of this proposed Bill. I believe that it is essential to protect the natural environment for the long-term sustainability of both human and non-human communities in Ontario. It is short-sighted to encourage development that damages complex natural ecosystems that provide essential life-giving services such as rainwater storage, forest canopy coverage that combats urban heat islands and global warming, biodiversity that supports recreational and educational opportunities, and clean water. Furthermore, the implications of this Bill that opportunities for public comment on proposed development may be circumvented are dangerous and fundamentally undemocratic. It is the responsibility of the provincial government, as elected by its constituents, to represent the interests of the public. This Bill threatens that relationship. I am firmly against this Bill and urge the government to seriously reconsider passing this Bill.
