I wish to express my concerns regarding the suggested changes to the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act, 2023.
I strongly object to Schedule 8 within the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025. This schedule seeks to exempt all projects connected to Ontario Place redevelopment (including any related enterprises or activities occurring outside the main site) from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993.
The Environmental Bill of Rights Part II establishes essential requirements for "minimum public participation that must occur before Ontario's Government proceeds with decisions on environmentally significant proposals regarding policies, Acts, regulations and instruments." By implementing Schedule 8, the government would effectively remove all public participation requirements and eliminate transparency about environmentally significant activities related to the Ontario Place project.
This amendment appears designed to favor private sector interests rather than serving the public good or environmental protection. I urge the Ontario Government to eliminate Schedule 8 from the proposed Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025.
