I disagree vehemently with any legislation and/or amendments to Ontario's Bill of Rights that remove current protections and processes for evaluating new projects, such as the changes being proposed for Ontario Place, including removing or watering down rigorous environmental protection and consultation with both Indigenous Peoples and the general population. These so-called "impediments" to building projects, labelled as "red tape", are necessary checks and balances that safeguard our precious and irreplaceable natural resources and biodiversity. Without these safeguards, we are neglecting our solemn duty to protect these important resources - such as forests, waterways, and wetlands - that don't just provide a home to species of all kinds, but are necessary to our future survival as a human species. In the interest of short-term profit and dubious gains that often stand to benefit big developers more than they do the citizens of Ontario, we risk sacrificing the very things that future Ontarians will depend on over the longer term.
I don't object to improving government efficiency; I do object to measures that will ultimately harm my grandchildren and their children, not to mention fail the many at-risk species that governments like Ontario's current one are willing to gamble away. As a taxpayer and voter, I am standing up for their rights and those of future generations. Shame on this government for not finding better solutions to today's problems that don't compromise the future.
