I am writing to emphatically object to the proposed exemptions from the Environmental Bill of Rights that will remove the right of Ontarians to be advised of, or to comment on, any required permits to Ontario Place, on or offsite to support the project.
The Environmental Bill of Rights exists to ensure that Ontario's environment is protected for future generations. Thousands of Ontarians have voiced their concerns related to the protection of this fragile waterfront ecosystem. Citizens and experts have provided evidence-based commentary, as well as alternatives to the government's current plans. Bill 5 deprives citizens of their rights and prevents the government from gaining valuable community knowledge.
The proposal is not in the public interest, compromises the future of our critical waterfront site and serves only to benefit the private interests of foreign companies. It jeopardizes Ontario's environment when the province and the planet are facing a climate and biodiversity crisis.
