I am writing to strongly oppose the proposed exemptions to the Environmental Bill of Rights that would remove the requirement to notify or consult the public on any permits related to Ontario Place—both on-site and off-site—for this project.
The Environmental Bill of Rights exists to safeguard Ontario’s natural heritage for current and future generations. In the case of Ontario Place, thousands of Ontarians have already voiced thoughtful, informed concerns about the impact of development on this sensitive waterfront ecosystem. They’ve proposed reasonable and realistic alternatives, offering the government valuable insight that should not be ignored.
Stripping away these protections is not in the public interest. It undermines the future of a critical public space, silences community input, and serves primarily the private interests of foreign corporations. At a time when Ontario—like the rest of the world—is grappling with a climate and biodiversity crisis, this is yet another step backward in environmental protection and democratic rights.
