I am writing to voice my unequivocal opposition to Schedule 8 of Bill 5, which would strip Ontarians of their right to be informed about and comment on environmental decisions related to the Ontario Place redevelopment.
This move represents a dangerous and undemocratic rollback of environmental protections. By exempting the project from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, the government is effectively silencing the public on decisions that directly impact a treasured piece of Ontario’s natural and cultural heritage. The elimination of public participation, particularly in such a significant waterfront redevelopment, undermines transparency and trust.
Thousands of Ontarians have expressed legitimate, science-backed concerns about the environmental impact of this project—including the potential for untreated sewage to affect a recreational waterway. Rather than responding in good faith to public input, the government is choosing to bypass it entirely.
This exemption appears designed to serve the interests of private developers, not the people of Ontario. It endangers ecosystems, disrespects democratic processes, and sets a troubling precedent for future development.
I urge the government to immediately withdraw Schedule 8 and uphold the public’s right to environmental oversight and participation.
