I strongly oppose the proposed exemptions to the Environmental Bill of Rights that would strip Ontarians of their right to be notified about, or participate in, the permitting process for developments at Ontario Place — whether those developments occur on the site itself or in surrounding areas.
The Environmental Bill of Rights exists to safeguard our natural heritage, ensuring that Ontario’s environment is protected now and for generations to come. This protection must include Ontario Place, a vulnerable and cherished piece of our waterfront. Thousands of concerned citizens have raised valid, well-researched objections to the current redevelopment plans, offering practical and thoughtful alternatives. Silencing public input not only undermines democratic engagement but also discards the deep local knowledge communities bring to these conversations.
This exemption does not reflect the public interest. It endangers a critical public space and prioritizes the commercial interests of private, foreign entities. At a time of escalating climate and ecological crises, such a move is both reckless and short-sighted. Weakening environmental oversight and public accountability in moments like this sends the wrong message — that convenience and profit matter more than sustainability and transparency.
