I am writing to vehemently oppose the proposed exemptions from the Environmental Bill of Rights, which would strip Ontarians of their ability to be informed about and provide input on any required permits for Ontario Place, whether on-site or off-site, in support of the project.
The Environmental Bill of Rights exists to safeguard Ontario’s natural environment for future generations. In the case of Ontario Place, thousands of concerned citizens have voiced their objections, advocating for the protection of this delicate waterfront ecosystem. They have offered insightful, well-reasoned commentary and practical alternatives to the government’s current plans. This proposed exemption not only silences public voices but also deprives the government of valuable community knowledge.
The proposal is detrimental to the public interest, jeopardizes the future of this vital waterfront area, and prioritizes the private interests of foreign corporations. It represents yet another concession in environmental protection and transparency at a time when Ontario—and the world—faces escalating climate and biodiversity challenges.
