I strongly object to this bill. The elimination of environmental protections for a public resource fundamentally erodes all transparency and due process that protects the democratic rights of Ontarians to know about and have input on how their tax dollars are spent. It proposes to set an unacceptable and very dangerous precedent that erodes the government's responsibility to protect public interest. The transfer of public tax dollars to private foreign bank accounts does not benefit Ontarians in the long or short term, and many Ontarians have spoken out against the way that the Ford government is exempting itself from all accountability and awarding itself with unprecedented power to do so. It is unconscionable for the government to propose to destroy environmental protections during a climate crisis and to ignore the very people that it is supposed to exist to serve.
