I am submitting a comment to oppose Schedule 8 of the new Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025, which exempts every project tied to the Ontario Place redevelopment from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993.
Not only is this underhanded and undemocratic, it poses a very real threat to the existing ecosystem that is already in place. The Ontario government's overnight clearcutting and removal of trees at Ontario Place has already resulted in the loss of habitat for many animals who called it home, and any future measures need to be fully assessed and voted on by the very people who live in and around that neighborhood.
To pass Schedule 8 is a direct shirking of the government's responsibility to represent the people, in favour of pushing through a dishonest project by Therme, which has already been found to have misrepresented itself in numerous ways. It also calls into question whether there's been any double-dealing going on between the premier's office and Therme, as well as potentially any one of the major construction companies that the premier has been cozy with.
