I was born in Ontario and I love this province. I love Toronto, in particular because it allows me to live by a gorgeous lake and enjoy one of the greenest cities I've ever been to (and I've travelled across the world). To take an even broader scope I do believe that all Canadians value the natural beauty that exists across this nation.
It's for that reason that I cannot wrap my head around the proposed exemptions from the Environmental Bill of Rights that will remove the right of Ontarians to be advised of, or to comment on, any required permits at Ontario Place, on or off site, to support the project. I cite Ontario Place, of course, because what was once a public park that featured hundreds of mature trees is now a bulldozed stretch of land, barren of any life.
As a taxpaying citizen I appreciate and value the Environmental Bill of Rights that ensures the environment I and my friends and family live in is protected, especially from corporate interests that value profit over all else. I know I am not alone in voicing my opinion that any proposal put forth regarding Ontario Place should serve Ontarians and work to best utilize the natural environment we live in.
I implore you to consider that our planet, nation, province, and city are all worth stewarding and I believe in the government's ability and responsibility to carry out that work. For whatever else is being done in any other country or on any other continent I would like to think that we as Canadians and Ontarians can do, and want to do, better. "Unleashing Our Economy" should never come at the expense of our environment.
Kind Regards
