I do not believe this bill is designed to protect Ontario from a U.S. tariff threat. This government will do anything to ram through new developments without proper consultation. This is evidenced by Ford's decision to take back the Green Belt for development by his cronies.
Ford's track record on environment issues is abysmal and the introduction of Bill 5 by Stephen Lecce, who has no experience on the environment does not allay my concerns. Lecce's track record on education was terrible, in my opinion.
MZOs are also being used to fast track development, overriding muncipalities wishes. We have seen a 17 fold increase in usage from the past 20 years (Ontario's auditor general) which demonstrates a disregard for any type of meaningful consultation.
Indigenous rights are not being considered, especially in the area known as Ring of Fire. As I understand it, this is a very large area which is environmentally sensitive. I am also concerned about the attempt to exclude archaeological assessments which may result in loss of burial sites and lands.
