I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed “Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025 (Bill 5).” This legislation poses serious threats to environmental protections, Indigenous rights, and democratic participation.

First, the bill removes key safeguards that ensure public oversight of environmentally significant projects. By exempting developments like Ontario Place from standard environmental review and public consultation, it opens the door for unchecked construction that could cause long-term ecological damage. These processes exist to protect the public interest and ensure that development doesn’t come at the expense of our ecosystems and natural heritage.

Second, the creation of “special economic zones” threatens to bypass the legal and moral obligation to consult Indigenous communities. These zones could allow for fast-tracked projects without adequate dialogue, risking further marginalization of Indigenous voices and violating principles of consent and land stewardship.

Third, the bill undermines the public’s right to be informed and involved. Removing the requirement for public notice and comment strips citizens of their ability to meaningfully participate in decisions that directly impact their environment, health, and communities. This sets a dangerous precedent that weakens democratic engagement and accountability.

Economic development cannot and should not come at the cost of silencing public voices, ignoring Indigenous rights, and harming the environment. I strongly urge the government to withdraw this bill and instead pursue policies that strengthen—not dismantle—Ontario’s environmental protections and democratic processes.
