Please note my deep disagreement and objection to the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act (2025) (Bill 5) in general, and to the section dealing with the private development of Ontario Place in particular. Regarding Bill 5 in general, this is already problematic as an omnibus bill that imports multiple pieces of legislation, all of which seem designed to reduce civilian oversight, to continue to channel more power into the executive branch of the provincial government, and to enable said executive branch to exempt select developers from legal requirements - including environmental assessments, municipal bylaws, regional authorities, and public notification and consultation. Regarding Ontario Place, the province has already overreached its powers and failed in its duty to the public by pushing through a special deal with Therme to develop and privatize this site (at the expense of the public), and by exempting itself from its obligation to answer to the public through legal challenges (including challenges related to maleficence and failure to uphold fiduciary responsibilities), via the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act of 2023. With this new (2025) proposed Act it appears that the provincial government is taking its lack of accountability and lack of actual or intended fiduciary responsibility to new levels, by exempting the Ontario Place "development" from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights of 1993 - meaning that there will be no requirement to give public notice of or to receive public comments about anything to do with the "redevelopment" Project. I can see why this exemption would be hidden in a giant omnibus bill - for there is not even the spurious justification that notices and public comments "impede" projects (and that said "impediments" somehow make us vulnerable to President Trump) - as the provincial government has demonstrated time and time again, particularly in regard to Ontario Place, public objections present no obstacle to its deal making and fast tracking of selective projects. For shame!
