I am opposed to the changes to environmental protections proposed in Bill 5. I was born and raised in Ontario, trained in environmental sciences at Fleming College, and am now working as a wildlife biologist in Alberta. Throughout my career I have seen provincial legislation at work to protect habitat in Ontario, Yukon, British Columbia, and Alberta, and can therefore advocate for its utmost importance. Using legislation to ensure protections are well-informed and consistently adhered to is critical in ensuring not only Canada's extensive wildland is preserved for generations, but also to ensure that economic benefits that come with that preserved land can be enjoyed by our children and theirs. Using legislation to bypass permitting, overpower experts, and speed projects along is a contravention of the very purpose of provincial laws. I strongly urge the Ontario government to re-think the restructuring of environmental protections in the name of development. If the oil patch can follow environmental protection laws, so can the Ring of Fire. Do this right.
