Further to the Province’s request for input related to the proposed amendments to the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016, Council for the Township of Montague is providing the following comments:
Having received notification that the mixing of eligible and non-eligible sources of recycling materials will not be permitted after January 1st, 2026, the Township of Montague, with approximately 33 non-eligible curbside collection stops, would consider it to be cost-prohibitive to provide a standalone curbside collection program. In addition to the potential cost implications in hiring additional municipal staff to collect recycling materials/operate a depot, or entering into separate collection contracts, the unnecessary environmental implications for two separate contractors to provide similar collection services along the same route is redundant.
In consideration of the limited number of non-eligible sources in Montague Township, and the fact that the majority are small businesses located along residential routes (eligible sources), the Township of Montague would deem it appropriate that there be provisions for municipalities to enter into a service agreement with their respective Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) for the collection of non-eligible source recycling, in conjunction with the collection of eligible source materials.
