While there is certainly a time and place for investigation, discretion, and ensuring that civic and provincial standards are met. With regards to building necessary housing in Hamilton, the redevelopment of the Jamesville project is far overdue.
The protestations of CN Rail have gone on long enough. There was perfectly enough safety for the decades that the previous housing units were there, and those zoning for the new building project will ensure that at least those standards are met.
When all three levels of government are clamouring for more housing in areas that are most affected by poverty and marginalization of Ontarians, it is shameful that we have had to wait for this long while boarded up units sit stagnant in an area that is desperate for more geared to income units.
The province has fallen far under its own goals with regards to building housing over the past several years. This is an area, that apart from what would probably be a very quick demolition, could be shovel ready within the next few months. Let's not stall anymore. Let's not subject those living in poverty to partisan hackery.
The time has come for redevelopment of the Jamesville neighbourhood. If it takes a step through the provincial government to ensure that Hamilton, as a city, can take the next steps necessary to helping to eliminate the unhoused problem in our city, then the provincial government needs to step up immediately.
