I started rock climbing in Devil’s Glen 35 years ago as a beginner. For the first two years my partner and I barely saw anyone else. Routes were mostly traditional and required topping out through dense cedars. As the years went by more and more people started climbing there as well. The occasional bolted route and anchors at the top of the popular traditional routes were installed.
This was a game changer, you no longer had to climb through to the top, and this increase the safety level of the sport. It also changed the focus from the often vegetated cracks and low angle faces to the clean open faces.
In the years to follow several more bolted routes were installed and that brings us to where we are today.
The one thing that never changed was the wild feel to Devil’s Glen, this hidden treasure only minutes from the highway. Just waiting to be explored and enjoyed. I really feel that Devil’s Glen plays a significant part of southern Ontarios climbing history and should be treated as such.
