I am writing to express my concerns regarding the restrictions on the installation of bike lanes. As a motorhead, there is nothing more enjoyable than taking a car on a drive on open roads. However, having to endure gridlock is the complete opposite. It is at best annoying and at worse soul crushing.
Removing bike is shown to not improve gridlock as people travel by bicycle based on where they need to go not necessarily just were bike lanes exist. On this note, it is not unreasonable to infer that not providing bike lanes would yield any benefit on easing gridlock.
In fact, the lack of viable cycling infrastructure has the potential to cause people to travel by driving instead of by riding bicycles which means occupying a larger road footprint per person. And while it is ostensibly possible to continue adding more lanes for motor vehicles. This can easily create a vicious cycle where more people choose to drive leading to the widening of the roadways leading to more people choosing to drive. The fact that Los Angels is a place famous for its super wide motorways and even more infamous for its horrendous traffic is a stark reminder of why more lanes is not a solution
Instead, the best way to ease congestion is to make it easier for people to get around without needing to drive. This will tend to make people choose to not drive and instead use means with lower road footprints and hence less gridlock. Which will allow people who have to drive to have an easier time and for motorheads to get to enjoy their cars as they are meant to be enjoyed.
