I have been involved in discussions around the Grand Trail Project. which is advocating a network of trails in the Grand River Watershed. I am also a supporter of trails in the Region of Waterloo. I am very interested in trails for commuting, recreation and tourism.
I believe that, although the Grand Trail Project is in the early stages of development, it has the potential to be a major recreation and tourism asset for the province, due to its central location in Southern Ontario and its connectivity to other major cycling routes.
Three important sections of this trail are not included in your proposal:
1. A connection along the Grand River through the Six Nations Reserve. The Six Nations Council has endorsed the proposal, which I believe would have the added benefit of improving relations between Six Nations and people of Ontario, as well as provide an important connector between Caledonia and Brantford.
2. The Walter Bean Trail follows the Grand River through Kitchener and Waterloo, and is supposed to continue through Woolwich Township. This would connect with the Guelph to Goderich Rail Trail. It should continue to Elora, meeting the Elora Cataract Railway which connects to Belwood Lake.
3. There is also a need for a connector, close to the Grand River, between Belwood Lake, Grand Valley, Luther Marsh, and Dundalk. This would connect the Grand Trail Project to the CP Rail Trail from Dundalk to Owen Sound, which would provide an additional connector from the Grand River to the Great Lakes.
These are important enhancements to your network.
Thanks, Anne
