I agree with HCA’s submission to the ERO. I am concerned about losing local decision-making and I support keeping conservation decisions rooted in our community.
By "consolidation" into "regional" Conservation Boards, the government will be reducing local observation and oversight in projects that effect the environment. Essentially, people who do not live close to sensitive ecological features (from watersheds to species to land use) will be making decisions about how they will be treated.
If "consolidation" is needed, then the Hamilton Conservation Authority's suggestions should be priorities:
- Set clear, consistent provincial standards across all conservation authorities, and holding everyone accountable to them.
- Invest in shared technology, such as the provincial permitting portal, within the current structure.
- Provide stable provincial funding to strengthen core programs and modernize operations.
- Work directly with municipalities, Indigenous partners, conservation authorities, and residents before making any major changes.
