Funding should prioritize protected bike lanes and cycle tracks within cities. This is where they'll get the most use by kids and adults alike.
For bike touring, off-road routes are much more pleasant and can be used by families. They become a destination in and of themselves. The Airport Parkway in Ottawa will not be a pleasant bike route. Connecting off-road sections (eg: Sawmill Creek pathway next to the Airport Parkway) with other off-road sections would be more sensible. We need safe cycling infrastructure that connects. Too often, projects are limited to a street or part of a street and leaves the user hanging in an unsafe intersection with nowhere to go. People on bikes need true networks.
Factors for my route choices: -When at all possible I choose protected bike lanes, cycle tracks and off-road paths -I avoid roads with high traffic speed (I try to minimize time spent on any road where that the average vehicle speed is 50 km/h and over even if a painted bike lane is present) -I avoid roads with heavy car and truck traffic volume (I choose quiet roads)
I bike with my kids daily. I need safe routes and so do my kids. We must make our streets safe so that families can choose active transportation and be healthier.
