This proposal is completely irresponsible and shameful. Ecosystems in the Far North are vulnerable because of human decisions to burn fossil fuels. Allowing uncontrolled development in the Far North would make these ecosystems even more vulnerable than they already are. This is a short-sighted decision that sacrifices social and ecological health for economic gain. The profits from this development will go into the pockets of multinational corporations while the people of Ontario will be left to deal with the fallout. This proposal is not in the best interest of Ontarians.
Further, the Far North Act was deliberately intended to restrict development until, or if, a community based land use plan is in place. Repealing this act is a clear signal that the government does not respect the wishes of Indigenous Peoples in the Far North who may not want any development in their communities. This proposal is a step backwards from all of the progress that has been made in working with Indigenous communities towards Truth and Reconciliation. Shame on you.
Who benefits from this proposal? Certainly not the people of Ontario.
