To avoid the continued loss of beautiful buildings (commercial and residential) in Toronto, and their replacement with ones which are uninspired at best and eyesores at worst, I believe any law dealing with proposed demolition to ANY building should include necessity for any proposal to demolish to go through a municipal process whereby the city decides whether that building should be designated Heritage if it isn't already, and if the decision is affirmative the development application should be stopped there.

I also think it should be far MORE difficult and expensive for developers to apply to demolish heritage buildings.

Finally, I think that when demolishing any old building for redevelopment, there should be incentive to keep parts of the facade as part of the new project. Furthermore, I think that there should be a requirement to use materials similar in colour and texture to those of demolished buildings when residents feel that that those materials and colours contribute to the style and personality of a neighbourhood/area.
