Ontario needs to move faster to get to zero waste and to create a circular economy. We shouldn't be shipping waste overseas but dealing with it here.
Right now, major electronics companies are deliberately creating products that will break down so that consumers have to buy more, they are withholding repair information and they aren't doing more than the minimum to manage the toxic waste their products create. E-waste regulations in Ontario should work to fix this.
E-waste regulations should include requirements for producers to have longer warranties and to make repair information, tools and parts available for what they sell. This should not be a voluntary choice of companies, and they shouldn't be rewarded with lower recycling requirements if they do it - that simply penalizes the Ontario public.
The government should enforce rules for what a right to repair looks like - otherwise companies could make repair information and tools available, but difficult, time-consuming and confusing to obtain to discourage people from using it.
