The planning policy is a vital tool in protecting our heritage resources, most of which are non-renewable resouces, such as archaeological. It is through insight into the past that we can live in an informed and enlightened future. All heritage types, including archaeological, are important and valued resources. Moving their care from the environmental protective side to class them under obstacles provides the public with a clear statement that our government does not care about heritage, about their past.

I work in the heritage community and know that the general public is very supportive of preserving and documenting archaeological sites. interest in sites is evident from people stopping by and from the frequent requests to speak to community and school groups about archaeology, especially if there is a local site under excavation. It is a tangible opportunity for individuals to connect with their past or the history of this great country, the Indigenous peoples who have lived here for mlllenia and the settlers who created our communities.

It is very important that our government shows that they care and value our history.
