I am writing to express a lack of support for the proposed changes to penalties in the Environmental Protection Act, the Ontario Water Resources Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Pesticides Act and the Nutrient Management Act. Moving from a daily fee to a one-time fee for dumping and polluting limits the overall financial penalties dumpers can be fined. The proposed amounts, while higher than daily limits, are tiny compared with the overall potential daily amounts. These amounts would be nothing for large corporations to cover, and would provide less incentive to find safe disposal methods.
These changes are also disconcerting to me, a tax-paying citizen and person who breathes local air, drinks local water and interacts with the local environment, for a few reasons. This governments consistent display of siding with large corporations over citizens is powerfully frightening, and goes against the narrative you've tried to advance. Further, if you are going to cut services, it makes more sense to retain income so we can at least preserve some of the things that make our communities great. You may want to show your corporate buddies that you're going to make things easier for them and I promise you that Ontarians will not forgive you for putting their health, futures, and economic positions at risk.
