RE: ERO number 019-3471: Eliminating Renewable Energy Requirements
I am writing regarding the Progressive Conservative proposal to repeal the provisions of the Electricity Act & Ontario Energy Board Act that prioritise renewable energy. I honestly cannot believe the short sightedness of this party currently in power in Ontario.
We are in a climate emergency and renewables are required to meet any form of reduction in carbon emissions. In other parts of the world, they are racing to develop their renewables, including clean technology that they will be able to sell to other countries. Here in Ontario, our government is sticking its head in the sand and pretending nothing is happening. Shocking to say the least! It seems like the word "progressive" is very much a misnomer for the current government.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) report that was just released - Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector - states “Renewable energy technologies like solar and wind are the key to reducing emissions in the electricity sector, which is today the single largest source of CO2 emissions.” [see link below] It recommends increasing renewable energy.
If Ontario wants a 21st century economy, it needs to attract investment in 21st century technologies: investing in renewables is clearly one of the main avenues to do that. This will provide jobs for Ontarians and our young people. It will attract new investors and researchers. Importantly it would also reduce air pollution.
Given all these benefits, I ask that you urge the provincial government to reconsider its proposal to eliminate the provisions that prioritise renewable energy. For the sake of all Ontarians and particularly the children of Ontario and the generations to come after us, it is crucial that this province prioritise a clean energy future and move away from a carbon-based economy.
