I think we need to tax…

I think we need to tax carbon, and carbon burners (gas guzzlers especially) on a progressive scale. Big SUVs should have a huge (20,000$) tax put on them, electric cars should actually get a rebate - all on a scale based on their MPG or l/100km. All money collected on SUVs and poor mileage cars should be dedicated towards public transit and more go trains. The mpg or l/100kms neutral point should start at 35mpg in its first year, and go up by 2 mpg every year to force automakers to switch/design better vehicles. I think we should put a further tax on gasoline - this tax should be dedicated towards building and buying more rail right-of-ways so we can have more efficient go train schedules. I think we should tax all diesel fuel and dedicate this tax to converting trucks to natural gas operation (and the infrastructure to support that kind of refueling). I think we should tax all carbon based heating fuels and pump that money as a dedicated tax into free/subsidised insulation, triple glazed windows and general efficiency based renovations for heat-leaking buildings. I think we should force all landlords to bring all rentals units up to a certain level of heat insulation so as to not force squeezed tenants to choose between being poor or being warm. Such renovations should come from a general carbon tax. I think we should tax all commercial air flights 5% further and dedicate that tax to the purchase and upgrading of a massive high speed rail system across Canada. I think we should add a one percent tax onto the HST and have that tax dedicated towards the provincial debt. I think we should add another point on the hst and dedicate this tax to the solvency of Ontario hydro, purchase back the privatised portions, and massively invest in future solar/wind/passive and electrical storage systems. This tax should run until Hydro's debts are all paid, the grid is modernised, and we have at least 25% of present capacity as extra available power for emergencies and coming heat/weather anomalies. I think we should also tie directly into Quebec hydro's massive and sustainable renewable hydro resources. I think we should legislate that all new buildings in Ontario be of a high R-value in terms of insulation, should be triple glazed, should be green roofed, and must be covered with at least 50% of their surface in solar panels.
