The proposed changes to the province's Greenbelt plan will have disastrous consequences for future generations. These changes will only encourage developers to develop even more suburban sprawl that is not physically nor fiscally sustainable for municipalities who will be burdened with the costs of maintaining these neighbourhoods and providing essential services to them. In every community impacted by these proposed changes, there is enough space to develop more dense housing units that are not only more fiscally sustainable for municipalities to maintain but for families as well since these areas will be less dependent on car usage and are better serviced by public transit.
If the provincial government is truly interested in building more affordable housing for Ontarians that need it instead of providing yet another financial windfall for its wealthy developer friends, it would make building more dense housing on already existing urban boundaries its top priority. And to ensure affordability, the province would also require these developers to ensure that at least 7 - 10% of new units are designed for rent-geared-to-income housing.
