I am firmly against the government's proposal to reduce area in the current Greenbelt Zone.
The government has said this will allow developers to build an additional 50,000 homes. But this will not go far in helping address the housing crisis--especially since these homes are likely to be suburban, low-density housing. The only solution to the housing crisis is for the government to invest in high density social housing, built at a large scale in existing cities and coupled with investments in public transit.
Reducing the Greenbelt through additional development and new super highways is only going to promote urban sprawl which adds environmental and economic costs (e.g., traffic congestion; higher cost for urban utilities and emergency services per square kilometer of housing; loss of agricultural lands and forests; etc.).
