The arguments for developing the greenspace are not compelling, they are flawed and mostly false claims.
Developing the greenspace will turn a valuable natural area into another bland, expensive stretch of urban sprawl that will largely be populated by affluent people who could otherwise live elsewhere.
The proposed homes will not be affordable. This development will do nothing to solve any perceived housing crisis. This development is purely for profit. Canada should not be sacrificing protected areas for the personal profit of wealthy developers.
Home prices are already falling in most urban areas. There is an abundance of small towns with affordable homes.
The government's plan to bring in more immigrants than any other nation in the next few years is controversial and out of line with the rationale that other leading countries have adopted. Further to this, it seems the government intends on landing these new immigrants in areas that are already over populated. While we do have an obligation to help people out of destitute situations and to welcome folks who will add economic value to our economy, the government should be planning to spread out the intended population influx and not land everybody in the golden horseshoe. These communities are already built on land that should have been reserved for farming and preserved as greenspaces. Planning further sprawl in the areas is foolish and goes against basic urban planning and enviromental rationale.
I have always been a proud Canadian but I am increasingly becoming ashamed of my government. Ashamed of their treatment of First Nations people, the broken treaties and the government's refusal to acknowledge the genocide that is happenning to them. Ashamed of the constant degradation of environmental policies, which are always done for corporate profit. Ashamed of our virtue-signalling, hypocrite Prime Minister who continuously embarrasses us on a world stage. Ashamed of Ontario's Premier who emulates Donald Trump for the most repulsive reasons.
Development of the greenbelt will galvanize a generation of Canadians in their hatred of a group of short sighted career politicians who should keep in mind that they are aging and will soon be in the tender care of those coming up beneath them. History will not forget and neither will we.
