I am strongly opposed to this legislation because of a number of reasons: 1) the province needs to limit urban sprawl because we need to protect valuable farmland and maintain or enhance our own food sovereignty. The cost to buy imported produce is rising and is out of the reach of many Ontarians. We need to have more cost-effective choices at a local level. 2) urban sprawl fragments and destroys land habitat for wildlife. So many of our bird species, amphibians, turtles, etc., are endangered due to sprawl 3) who is going to pay for the infrastructure for this housing if it is not the developers? If municipalities are to carry the financial burden this only means higher taxes for existing residents. 4) the Oak Ridges Moraine and the Niagara Escarpment need to be protected from development because this land protects the water table of millions of Ontarians. 5) we absolutely require a balance in the way land development matters are decided and to limit the decision-making contributions of conservation authorities is undemocratic. 6) the province should be doing more to work with municipalities on building housing density within their existing boundaries first. 7) this legislation is not at all in line with meeting the spirit of truth and reconciliation with indigenous communities in the province. It needs to be reworked to respect their position and voice. Otherwise, there may be court challenges. 8) what is it in this legislation that is going to help meet carbon emissions targets as set by all the industrialized countries? It can only increase emissions. 9) there is a skilled trades shortage as well as building materials—how is this going to change to meet the intent of this legislation? This legislation cannot possibly fulfill the building of 1.5 million houses in 10 years.
